Designing from the Outside In: Jennifer Larocque’s Approach to Outdoor Lighting

Designing from the Outside In: Jennifer Larocque’s Approach to Outdoor

Jennifer Larocque, Artistic Director at Dessins Drummond, has spent over a decade designing homes that blend warmth, function, and emotional depth. Rooted in the belief that a house should evolve with the family inside it, her work is grounded in everyday life—homes that feel timeless and easy to live in. “What matters most to me is the human side of design,” she explains. “I take the time to understand how people live, and I build around that.”

Her spaces are not only visually refined—they’re built to last, inside and out. And for Jennifer, outdoor lighting plays a quiet but essential role in how a home presents itself from the street and how it welcomes from the doorstep.

Lighting That Supports the Architecture

When designing exteriors, Jennifer looks to lighting to highlight structure, define rhythm, and bring the architecture into focus. Her curated outdoor collection with Union reflects that philosophy. “To bring out the full potential of a home, you can’t overlook the details—lighting included,” she says.

Her selection includes pieces like the Dresden Wall Sconce, which adds soft contrast to clean-lined façades, and the Soren Outdoor Hanging a sculptural piece suited to covered porches or entryways. Each fixture is chosen for its quiet strength—nothing too bold, nothing purely decorative, but always designed to bring balance and warmth.

Texture, Volume, and Visual Flow

Jennifer is drawn to the relationship between form and feeling. Whether sketching early concept lines or selecting final finishes, she pays close attention to scale, surface, and how a space moves. “When I start a design, I think about the lines, the proportions, and the feeling they create,” she says. That attention to flow carries through to her lighting choices—fixtures that echo architectural forms, provide layered depth, and respond to natural materials around them.

In her Union collection, you’ll find slim-profile sconces that sit comfortably against wood cladding, neutral-toned outdoor hangings that blend with stone, and pendants that offer a touch of refinement without pulling focus.

A Living Reference

Jennifer’s recent project, Maison Référence, is both personal and public—a family home built as a point of inspiration for others. Throughout the process, she featured trusted partners, including Union Lighting, to share honest, real-world design choices. “Union was an easy decision,” she notes. “The variety, the finishes, the unique styles—I found everything I needed to create a cohesive exterior palette.”

The lighting from this project, now part of her curated Union collection, reflects the calm, intentional atmosphere she designed into every corner of the home.

Jennifer Larocque’s outdoor picks are not trend-driven—they’re carefully considered, rooted in structure, and shaped by real living. To see lighting that will help frame and finish your space, browse the Jennifer Larocque Outdoor Collection, or visit our Montreal showroom for a closer look.
